This score begins magnificently with the noble main theme, which is - fortunately - heard several times on the CD, and most beautifully developed in “Welcome Aboard”. The score also contains Goldsmith's Klingon theme and some scary Borg music (which is not at all related to the one Ron Jones composed for their well-known appearance in the STTNG TV series). Most of the music reflects the exciting action that went from one climax to the next in the movie. Which means it is not an pleasant listening experience thoughout.
The score works very well in the movie. This is a promotional 2-CD release. Saying it contains the complete score is something of an understatement. Some tracks are even contained twice, as slightly different recordings, and the final track on the second CD reflects the recording sessions with Jerry Goldsmith (including talks). This release does not suffer from the digital pops or the pop songs of the official release. The additional music on the second CD is really great to have, and at least of the same quality as the non-main-theme tracks on the official release, if not better.
