Review

The first track has a very nice beginning and a very nice end. In between it is just like the rest of the score, of about average quality. There is no such grand theme as in “First Contact”, and the listening experience is not as great as in “Generations”. The one recurring action theme (e.g. in “No Threat”) is quite unmemorable and uninteresting.

Several tracks feature effective synthesizer sounds in addition to the obligatory orchestra, which is not a bad thing. “The Drones Attack” has a very short hint on Goldsmith's Klingon theme (one of his trademarks in scoring for Star Trek).

Fortunately, the lovely Ba'ku theme from the beginning returns at the end of the CD. This a real highlight on this CD. The great theme from Star Trek: The Motion Picture, of course, makes an appearance once more. Overall, this score is slightly above average. I wouldn't mind if Dennis McCarthy took over again next time a Next Generation movie is due.
