Review

Another great achievement of Joe Hisaishi. Princess Mononoke has three divine main themes, which are heard several times on the CD. The “Legend” theme, however marvellous, in my humble opinion it is not developed in the best conceivable way: the end seems to be not as gifted as the beginning of the melody. The best theme is presented as a moody piano concert piece backed by the orchestra: “Ashitaka and San”. Just delicious.

There are several dissonant tracks that function well in the film, but are not very enjoyable on CD, notably the battle tracks and the “Demon God” tracks.

Unfortunately, all the pieces are quite short. At least the end credits make up for this. The music was re-released as a symphonic suite, which does not suffer from the very short tracks and is played entirely by a real orchestra.
