Review

An exquisite action score. Although The Rock bears resemblance to Crimson Tide, Backdraft etc., it is unique in that (unlike Crimson Tide) it contains a multitude of very noble and exciting themes and at the same time offers an improved sound quality (compared with Backdraft). There is even a very lovely and beautiful melody that crops up twice, once played by a flute and backed by strings (in “Jade”), once by a full orchestra (at the end of “Rocket Away”).

Two main themes were composed by Hans Zimmer. Apart from this, this score is mostly a work by Nick Glennie-Smith.

What is difficult to tell is to what extent The Rock is actually played by a real orchestra, drums, electric guitar and sung by a live choir, or where Media Ventures' electronic gear jumps in. Probably the gear jumps in all the time... Zimmer is said using a sample library he created himself working with the London Symphony Orchestra.

A very worthwhile purchase if you are not a purist. A must for Zimmer fans, of course.
